Biography

He was born in Bologna on 10/12/1959, he graduated in medicine and surgery with honours in 1984 at the Catholic University of the Sacro Cuore in Rome with an experimental thesis in vascular microsurgery, he specialized in orthopaedics and traumatology in 1989 with honours at the same university with a thesis on the treatment of anterior knee instability with artificial ligaments. Since 1985 he has been working at the S. Anna Clinical Institute in Brescia where he has been Director of the Department of Orthopaedics 1 since 1995. He trained at the Catholic University with Professor Fineschi and his father, Professor Tarcisio Marega, former director of the Orthopaedic Institute of Malcesine sul Garda, he then attended numerous orthopaedic centres of excellence: Houghston Othopaedic centres by Jack Houghston and Jimmy Andrews in 1986, the Orthopaedic and Artritic Hospital in Toronto, the University of Gainesville in Florida, Keio University in Tokyo, and countless other centres in the years that followed.

He has participated in all the annual congresses of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (the most important orthopaedic meeting in the world) of which he has been an international member of the AAOS since 1993. He has performed more than 10000 prosthetic surgeries: over 6000 hip arthroplasty surgeries, over 3000 knee arthroplasty surgeries and over 1000 highly complex hip and knee prosthetic revisions. Since 2000 he has been organizing training courses in hip and knee prosthetic surgery at the S. Anna Clinical Institute in Brescia and at the San Camillo Hospital in Trento for Italian and foreign surgeons and has also performed prosthetic surgery operations and courses in various European and non-European countries (20 roadshows in India since 2004).

He has published dozens of scientific studies in the best journals in the field concerning hip and knee prosthetics and high-complexity prosthetic revision, including the prestigious Putti Archive, a case review on isoelastic prostheses and in the Italian Journal of Orthopedics a similar article on the S-ROM prosthesis. He presented the Dysplastic Hip Prosthesis Poster in 2005 and the Metal-to-Metal Veneering Prosthesis Poster in 2018 in collaboration with Harris Laboratories at Massachusetts General Hospital at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Congress. Developer of the Physica knee prosthesis with an innovative design with the best reproduction of knee kinematics (first implant in the world on 7 October 2013 at the San Camillo hospital in Trento) and the Friendly Short hip prosthesis (the first short cemented stem in the world for which a clinical study was conducted at the S. Anna Clinical Institute in Brescia that allowed to prove the validity and excellent results of the prosthesis. Also, at the San Camillo Hospital in Trento, the clinical study for a new generation cementless hip prosthetic stem that allows the femoral neck to be preserved was completed with excellent results. He has given countless lectures at the most important congresses in the world, chairing the European Conference of Orthopaedics (EFORT) in Seville in 2009 with more than 400 international surgeons. He has been a guest of the most prestigious hospitals in the world to perform hip and knee prosthetic surgery in Europe, the United States, India, China, Australia and Korea. Today he collaborates with the Tessari Studi Legs Medical Institute, offering his professionalism at the service of patients.
